What Kinds of Cases Are Tried in State Courts?
State courts are essential to the administration of justice in the United States because they handle by far the largest number of cases and have the most contact with the public. State courts handle the cases fhat people are most likely to be involved in, such as robberies, traffic citations, broken contracts, and family disputes.
The state courts have such a heavy caseload because their general unlimited jurisdiction allows them to decide almost every type of jurisdiction refers to the kinds of cases a court is authorized to he recent years, the annual number of state court cases has been roughly 30 million. By contrast, in the same period, a little more than i m cases have been brought each year in the federal courts; approximately 70 percent of these were bankruptcy filings, 30 percent were civil and the rest were criminal cases. The number of judges in each s] further illustrates the difference: There are some 1600 judges in the federal courts, but almost 30,ooo in the state courts.
